Guitar Amp Bother
I've been playing guitar for about 25 years. I spent a lot of that messing about, learning a few songs, amd strumming a few chords.
That all changed just over two years ago, when I press-ganged a couple of friends into starting a band. We meet up once a month and make some music. No gigs, nothing too serious. Just a bit of fun.
I've improved massively over the last two years. I've learned some scales and more songs. It's really good fun.
My main amp at home was a Marshall MG30DFX from around 2004. It's started giving up a few months back, so I needed a replacement.
I usually use the amps at the rehearsal room, so just wanted something of a similar size at home. I bought the G4M (Gear4Music) 30w amp for £110. Now, when I got it, I tried out out on my Squier Strat and Tele. It sounded fine, so kept it.
Now a few months later, I hate it. It sounds rubbish. Especially the Tele. After fiddling around quite a bit, there'e basically no bass coming from the amp. The Tele is really twangy. I know, it's a Tele. But this is something else.
I'm not really sure what to do. I'd like a new amp, but don't really want to buy online. There aren't many guitar shops nearby, I also feel that there's a good chance I'll think something is fine, but turn out poor. The amps at the rehearsal room are 65w, so overkill for home. And Marshall don't make the DFX range anymore, it's been superceded by the GFX, and looks more of a modelling amp.
I didn't really think of myself as a tone-chaser, yet here we are.
